{Giveaway} Animal People by Charlotte Wood

'He could not find a single thing more to say. I just want to be free. He could not say those stupid words. They had already withered in his mind, turned to dust. He did not even know, he marvelled now, what the hell those words had meant.'
Product Talk by Nuffnang

'Animal People' the new novel by highly acclaimed author Charlotte Wood, is a delight to read from cover to cover. It draws you in with its descriptive language and understandable characters.

Set in a big Australian city, this novel follows the main character Stephen over the course of one day. But what a day! This day brings untold disasters and surprises. Will Stephen rise above his unfulfilled and somewhat bleak existence? The things that Stephen experiences on this day will shape his life to come and could even change his views and perception of the world. Will it make him stronger or will it destroy him completely?

In this novel, inner city living is brought into sharp contrast with those calm, leafy suburbs of the upper middle class. The author's descriptions of the various people that Stephen comes into contact with, will show you a real depth of compassion and understanding that the author has of urban life.

I will leave it up to you to find the reason why this book is called Animal People. The reason isn't at first fully discernible. Do you think of yourself as an animal person? What are the qualities or traits of 'animal people' as opposed to 'non-animal people?' Embarrassment is an emotion that separates us from the animals, Stephen suggests at one point.

The Sydney Morning Herald gave a glowing review of Animal People:
This is a compelling and ultimately moving novel that cements Wood's place as one of the most intelligent and compassionate novelists in Australia.'
